Blog #3- ChatRoulette

I decided to try out ChatRoulette for the first time tonight with two of my roommates. I would try to sum up the experience in one word but I just can't seem to pinpoint that one word...instead I would describe the experience as interesting, weird, crazy, awkward, disturbing, cool, funny, and gross.
Upon logging onto the site, I was prompted to turn my computer's speakers and microphone on. Then I pressed a button, "scan". Immediately the guy (in the picture) came on and started chatting me. He didn't have a microphone so we communicated via typing. After about a minute I "nexted" him and the system showed me someone new. During the 30 minutes I was on the site, I ended up nexting about 50 people and had about 15 next me. I noticed that when I had the camera on me (as opposed to a black screen) I had more people start talking to me. When I put a black screen up, I was nexted 5 times in a row. Also, other girls on the site nexted me right away. Conversations were short and to the point, with some involving typing and some speaking. Some people said very inappropriate things and even showed me some things I wasn't expecting to see. There were a lot of references to drugs/sex and many shirtless guys. Ages ranged from 15-25 with people living all over the world from Spain to Australia to Canada.
In my opinion, I wouldn't go on this site on a regular basis. However, when I asked people why they go on, many said they were bored or wanted to meet new people. Most people liked this site because it put them in control of who they wanted to talk to by pressing the "next" button.
