Practicum #6_Andrew Jacobs

So, I have pretty much completed the minimum 15 hours of field work for this practicum assignment. I have been trying to find new things to explore over the past few days but really I have just been doing the same stuff over and over again.

The one thing that I have noticed, however, is that every blog and every forum I visit all have links to other blogs. Once you go to another blog, that site will have a link back to the one you just came from.

I think this is pretty interesting because not only do these sites foster a community amongst users, it seems like the people who run these sites have also formed a community. For example Hypebeast.com has over 25 featured blogs that it links to.

Most of these blogs and forums have links back to Hypebeast on their pages. I think this is good because the same communities can grow and expand across many different sites. I know that these featured blogs will be somewhat similar to my interest in the one I originate with.

This way, these features are linking communities and interests. It could, however, create an echo chamber with outside blogs not getting as much attention. However, I believe this is not the case. People who creates these blogs want to reach new people and expand communities. Therefore, featured blogs and links work very well in networking people.

  1. I like the idea of networking too. I'm a big fan of comedy sites and find myself clicking on the links all the time in order to discover something new. Do you think, however, that communities could ever become too big as to become irrelevant?

  2. It is great that blogs employ the idea of networking. The great thing is that when you find a blog that you like the links to other pages they include are generally blogs that are either similar or they themselves like. It is interesting to see what those whose blogs you seem to follow and like find their inspiration or interests.
