Practicum #6 Olivia

I am continuing to play on Club Penguin but it is getting more frustrating by the day. I still don't know how to do anything and literally know one will help me out until I ask 15 times.

I decided to look at another way children/tweens use the internet--Facebook. One of the girls who I babysit for during the summer just got a Facebook and she is in 6th grade. She told me she was allowed to create her own Facebook because she had gotten good grades. Previously, I had talked to her occasionally when she was on her mom's. I went over to her house while I was home last weekend to see how she used the page as compared to me.

The first thing I noticed was that she updates her status constantly--whether it is going to dinner, watching a movie, or playing Wii, she is updating by the second. She has 169 friends--many who are family members, parents, and older friends (babysitters and their friends). I was surprised to see around 30 of her friends being from her middle school. I do remember when the first of her friends got a Facebook--I am assuming that once one friend gets it, more end up getting it until every parent has given in.

We looked around at the photos she has uploaded and I noticed that most of them are from family trips (nothing wrong with that!) where as high school/college students tend to have a majority of their pictures out with their friends and some with their families. I can tell when looking through her pictures with her friends that they are taking these intending to put them on Facebook for their other friends to see.

Personally, it doesn't bother me that younger people are starting to get Facebook because I am sure that I would want one too because so many people have them. As long as parents monitor what goes on some what I think kids are safe on the website.
