Practicum #5 Katie Yohn

So I haven't done a practicum post in awhile so I thought I would update you on my happenings in LambdaMOO! Over the past month some interesting things have happened. I found the mansion's library and poked around there for awhile. I looked at some books (yes you can read books, check them out, take them with you) and found one that was very interesting. Madlibs! I took it from the bookshelf, read it and never put it back on the shelf so I assume that I was carrying the item. There was a sign explaining that books have a "magnetic return system" therefore, I don't have to worry about going back to the library to drop the book off later. It automatically goes back to the library in a specific amount of time. Unfortunately I could read mad libs but could not figure out how to play.

I also found a schoolroom where you can take beginner, intermediate or advanced classes on LambdaMOO life. The classes teach you commands in the world and how to help build it. I tried the beginner's class with Mrs. Tootie. Unfortunately there were pre-requisites for the class and I had to read many documents explaining rules of the world. I read through some and started participating in the class, but found it to be extremely boring. Exploring the word is more fun.

I received an email on 3/20 informing me that I had been a member for a month so I could become a part of the political process and vote. There are petitions and ballots for the MOO that you can create, read, sign and vote on. Interesting!

Some other discoveries are that the guest bathroom is under construction, and someone covered a door with plastic wrap. Perhaps some MOOers are pranksters? It will be interesting to see how the construction progresses. I also discovered a purple rope over a door that tells guests to proceed at their own risk. I jumped the rope and came to a room with layers of dust. Another sign next to a corridor informed me that they "lost" guests who proceeded. I was to frightened to continue so I turned around. I have to wonder though, can people get injured, lost or even die in the world?

Another interesting happening was entering the master bedroom and setting off a burglar alarm! It asked me to find it and turn it off, but I could not locate the alarm. It kept "beeping" or rather the word beep kept appearing on the screen. I tried to leave but it kept asking me to turn off the alarm. I panicked and decided to just log off.

One last update for today: unfortunately my zMUD trail has ended! zMUD was the program I was using to connect to the MOO so now I am using the online telnet client, mudconnect.com.
