Practicum #2

Today, I bopped around on Second Life for about an hour or so. All the worlds I was venturing to were a little boring and empty, like dance clubs, Morocco, and to the mall. I finally found this world that was titled "Scuba Diving." I thought, finally, something active I can do in Second Life that I can't do normally in real life. I get to this world, and its night time and no one was there. I see these cool looking jet skiis, and I got genuinely excited to ride on them. When I clicked, it told me it would cost 890 in Second Life dollars, or 3.86 American dollars. I refuse to pay money to ride in the fake ocean on a fake ocean in a fake world. After being very upset about that, I figured maybe I could find someone to help me scuba dive. Nope, no one was there. I left the world very frustrated. Even shopping, which I can't always do in real life, cost money. I have no idea how to require second life money, do I need a fake job to make fake money? I guess I'll try and figure that out at another time.

  1. I find it really weird that people have to pay actual money in order to do things on second life. I would think since it is a fake world the option of using real money wouldn't even exist. I personally think it would take the fun out of the game if you are mixing it with real life things when it is supposed to be a virtual second world (life).

It reminded me of facebook and how you can buy gifts to send people. I really question who would actually do that because if you are spending your money on someone why wouldn't you send them a real gift they can actually hold instead of something virtual that they have no use for?

  2. I totally agree with Olivia. I thought the point of secondlife was to live vicariously through the computer interface.

When you imagine doing something or being someone, the money never enters your mind.

I guess what they are trying to do is make it more realistic, which is quite depressing in my mind. If people actually pay money to do these things, it means they really don't have much of a life outside of the game.

If these features exist, it obviously means that people are doing it. This makes my understanding of the game and it's users much deeper.
