Practicum 1 - Kyle Woolwich

Hey everyone, for my practicum project I will be examining political activists on the internet. When I first found out I was assigned this project, I was pretty happy because it is something I'm very interested in, and I also thought it would be pretty easy to find good examples. However, once I actually sat down to start doing some research, I realized I had no idea where to start. I didn't actively participate in any sort of political activist website prior to this project, or even know of one, so the first thing I did was to Google "political activism." This didn't really yield great results, mostly just informational websites about what political activism is or websites for Political Activism Committees, which wasn't really what I was looking for.

That was about 2 and a half weeks ago, when we were first assigned our projects. After about an hour of googling and aimlessly looking for something good, it finally dawned on me what to research. This was right when the protests at the capitol were really starting to heat up, so I decided to look at how activists were using the Internet for these collective bargaining protests. So far I've spent a good deal of my time looking at this, but I will also look at how activists used the Internet in the Middle East (mostly in Egypt), and also again here in Wisconsin for Senate Bill 6 (the voter ID bill).

I've spent about 7 hours so far researching these topics, mostly because while the protests at the capitol here in Madison were going on for the first few days I spent a good amount of time on Twitter and reading news stories about it. After this intro post, my plan is to try to devote at least 1-2 posts to each subject, sharing any relevant pictures, links, and analysis that I find.
