Practicum Post 1_Morgan Wille

A couple days ago I joined Daily Booth, a social networking site that allows you to interact with people from all over the world. The way I would describe it is a combination of facebook and twitter. Basically, upon joining the site told me to take a funny picture and write a comment. Within one minute, I had people comment welcoming me to the site. I really had no idea what I was getting myself into but soon figured out the run of the site. The point is to upload a picture everyday/ or multiple times a day and you have the choice to write a status. People have uploaded pictures of themselves, opinion on what movie they should watch, views from where they are, pictures of things they love, pictures of their pets, and even just random pictures that even I don't understand. The site allows you to make a profile that asks your age, a username, what country your from, and a short blurb about you. It has a live feed like facebook, however its a continuous feed that updates itself every second so that you don't have to scroll down. It's pretty addicting, I have to admit, to just sit there and look at pictures people upload and what they are doing. If someone catches your eye, for whatever reason, you can pause the feed and "follow" them. I quickly learned that its good to have a lot of followers and in order to get followers you need to actively engage with others. Lately I've been going on the site to write responses and comments to what people are doing. People are more likely to follow you or like your pictures if you comment on their status or photo. In the past couple days I have uploaded a couple photos and have gotten responses right away. It's really interesting to see the kind of people on the site. There are famous people, but mostly teenagers and college students. I've noticed that its an escape for some people and for others its a way for them to get attention. Also, I've noticed that a lot of people are self-conscious and need a way of expression where they can find others that can relate to them (that's the whole point of following someone and commenting on their status..its kinda like a way for them to be liked). The site also gains participants by stressing "It will be fun to look back on photos from a year or even a month ago and be able to remember what you were doing at that exact moment". So far I'm liking the site and think it's a cool way to express ones self through both pictures and words. On the left is the first picture I uploaded..haha.

  1. I've never heard of this site but it sounds addicting! It kind of reminds me of a photo collection I once saw. I don't remember the name of it, but basically a guy took one photo of himself (or with his lovers/family/friends) every day for about 30(?) years. You saw the progression of his life--bearded hippie in the 70s to father in the 80s and 90s--in a very simple way.

  2. haha thats awesome! That's pretty much what this site is too. I've been doing that and it is pretty cool to look back on my first pictures already. Who knows I might continue doing this for a year or more! Also, I think its not as a addicting as facebook but still a good social networking site for everyone :)

  3. since we're partners I decided to check this out to get a better idea of the site! it's definitely cool. and a VERY quick way to connect to random people - I liked that people immediately commented on my picture and welcomed me! what I *don't* like is that you can't delete your account (?!). I Googled to see if there was a way to do it and apparently they've been "working on it" for a year and a half now.
