Video Response

The video, “History of the Internet,” provided information on not only how, but also why the Internet was created. I consider myself to be pretty tech savvy; however, I lack knowledge on the evolution of the very technology, which captivates me for hours every day. The connection between the Internet and the Cold War is a fact I did not know. After watching the video and then reading Jane Abbate’s, “Cold War and White Heat,” I was pleased to see she went more in depth on the evolution of the Internet through the lens of the Cold War.

The government’s reliance on telephone companies like AT&T to help construct secure lines of communication is completely different than the security we think of today. No longer do we fear a lack of communication due to a bomb destroying a connection; today we fear secure connections being breached with the purpose of finding out our personal information. This is interesting because during the Cold War there was so much fear with the Red Scare that one would think security breaches of information would be priority.
