Practicum #7-KelseyK

While using the scrobbler, I came across a message this message:

I checked it out and it came as no surprise that Last.fm had/is still running into copyright issues. The process of removing certain stations apparently started in November in 2010, and it is actually only affecting subscribers (those who pay a monthly fee to get extra features). Here is a list of the features that are changing:
Last.fm makes sure to note that these changes will be replaced by bigger and better things (a statement I do not doubt). "By discontinuing a few stations, we're able to focus our energy on improving our most popular features, developing new and innovative stations, and offering the best music discovery service to our global audience."

Upon more exploration I discovered that there is a website dedicated to Last.fm apps (created by users) for your desktop, for the web and social networks, and for scrobbling (e.g. via Hype Machine). Last.fm and its users/fans are really on their game. Check it out! And Last.fm has an app for iPhone, iPad and Android users...hopefully a Blackberry app will come next!

  1. These type of apps I think are going to be the future of music. No one will have to download or buy songs for their ipod, it will all be done through your cloud music library in a subscription service. I know Amazon, Grooveshark, and Google all have/are working on these type of cloud music library apps.

  2. Thanks for sharing that link Kelsey. I use Android and already downloaded the app., it's pretty nice! Android is nice about free music, it has several applications to download music at no charge. Copyright will always be a problem for these kind of sites, but as they stated, they may as well concentrate on the improvement of their site.
