Hulu and YouTube
I watched this week's episode of "Chuck" on Hulu. The episode was sponosored by Verizon Wireless, although there were other commercials at various intervals as well. This reminded me of the single-sponsorship model used during the Golden Age of Television. I also noticed that you have the option of saying if an ad is relevant to you or not. Sometimes, you have the option of choosing which ads you would like to watch throughout the show. In this way, you can customize your ad experience, like the article we read a couple weeks ago discussed. I watched the music video for the Black Lips' "Short Fuse" on YouTube. There were no advertisements at the beginning or at any intervals, like there are on Hulu. There were also no ads that popped up on the bottom of the screen, although I know this is not the case with most YouTube videos. The main difference between Hulu and YouTube is that on Hulu you can have a customized ad experience, whereas on YouTube you are more likely to see random pop-ups that the video creator has allowed, or sometimes more professional-looking commercials at the beginning of videos that big industries own the rights to.
