Practicum Post 3_Morgan Wille

Hi everyone! Kelsey and I are presenting tomorrow on Social Networking. I will be discussing my 3 social networking sites- Dailybooth.com, GoTryItOn.com, and eHarmony.com. This being said, my questions for the class are...
1. Do you think SNS are becoming too similar? Do you consider social networking to be moving towards a monopoly?
2. Do you think people will rely on social networking more than face-to-face networking in the future?
3. In terms of social networking, specifically online dating, what are your opinions on its popularity in the future? Will more people be interested in electronically based compatibility or will in-person dating still be the dominant discourse?

  1. 1. I think if SNS's became too similar it would become hard to compete against what is becoming the all mighty Facebook. In order to compete a rival SNS has to differentiate itself from the crowd. While it may be tough and risky it would be a necessary step towards survival. As an example the broadcast network FOX was originally able to grow using the strategy of niche marketing, when other well established networks were already well established (NBC, CBS, ABC). This may be a strategy SNS's would have to employ.

    2. I don't think anything could ever truly replace face to face interaction. It's too intricate a thing to replicate (especially now). What SNS does (and what I believe it will continue to do) is act as a supplement to in-person interaction when distance acts as a barrier to interaction. The screen just has too many limitations.

    3. Again I think in-person interaction will never be beat. I do believe that online dating will continue to grow in popularity but it's my opinion that the best relationships (and friendships) are formed from shared real life experiences. There are simply too many subtleties in real life that edited text, pictures, and videos can replace.
